The horses have a majestic bearing, with neck held high, a front hoof raised and a rear hoof forward, about to take a step - an example of a pose which was then dear to Roman triumphalistic taste.
The two stallions have no saddle but a piece of tooth-edged cloth, held by a girth-strap and, at the front, by a harness decorated with a marine thiasos (Nereid and Triton holding a shield, with sea-horses and dolphins). These are not simply pieces of ornamentation but clear references to the relationship between these figures and the sea.
